"There is a great difference between tactical and competition obedience.  The former will cost you a medal in competition, while the latter can cost you your life downrange. Before you start trainining ask yourself what the dog's end purpose will be."

Development on Hourly Contract Basis

Turning an Alpha (A) into a controlable (A- or B+) is an art form, but being obedient does not have to mean docile, clingy, or codependent for that matter. While most competition based obedience results in a co-dependent K9 that mostly follows the handler unable to look away from their handlers in anticipation of their next cue, tactical K9 need to be self-motivated thinkers. A tactical K9 should be obedient yet maintain his life preserving aggression Defense and Fight Drive. A "guard" command (not as now commonly used to heel a dog between legs) should not be an over the top show of out of control aggression with exposed canines and flying slobber. Rather it should be a silent confidence, an obvious scaling up in the K9's demeanor and awareness that is noticeable to his intended target.  This should be followed by a scalling up when the threat enters the dogs pre-determined safety bubble.  Inside that bubble the dog should make it clear that he has identified a threat, giving the threat an opportunity to de-escalate by running away. As example a tactical K9 should be more like a tightly wound rubber band ready to snap, than a boisterous 'professional wrestler shouting at the camera'. That's an all- show-and-no-go ego boost for the owner/handler. In our system we place activation commands that progressively scale the K9's level of preparedness when actively entering a high-threat-area or departing a safe haven. It is at those key moments that we calmly inform the K9 with a proprietary command that alerts them that they are now on the job. An on switch if you will. But it is also important to turn off the switch in order to release their stress and lower their heart-rate. Initially this is done for very short periods, only seconds, then minutes, and so on

An important subject to inject here is our philosophy on the use of e-collars. But unlike so many other protection K9 training businesses, we do not use e-collars to train behaviors on 'green dogs'. Rather, we employ them as tuning forks during the development process and then only after very extensive acclimation process. For example once a behavior has been named through shapping and luring the dog fully understands what is expected from them when said command is given, only then will we layer an e-collar to speed upand crisp up execution of behavior if needed. Generally this is not until after the one year of age mark or in some cases such as with most pure-breed Dutchies, not until two.

We do not wok on a two week time frame for board and train like the large high output commercial franchises. Every dog is evaluated ahead of accepting the challenge. At that time we will give and individual time assessment and price quote. We set both the K9 and ourselves up for success.
